Wakefield Youth Lacrosse Association Mission

Founded in 2002 Wakefield Youth Lacrosse Association (WYLA) was created to provide the children of Wakefield and its surrounding communities an opportunity to learn and participate in the sport of Lacrosse. The association strives to offer a program that sets and maintains high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity amongst all of its participants.

Wakefield Youth Lacrosse Association provides travel team programs for both boys and girls 15 & under.  Intramural co-ed teams for children under 8, and under 6 are also available.

As the primary feeder program to the Wakefield High School Lacrosse program. WYLA has developed a strong relationship with both the Boys and Girls High School Lacrosse programs. This relationship benefits both WYLA and the High School program by coordinating our activities in promoting the sport of Lacrosse among the youth of Wakefield.

Association Profile

Wakefield Youth Lacrosse is a member of the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL).  The philosophy of MBYLL is to focus on teaching the sport of Lacrosse through participation. Teams that participate in the MBYLL do so for the thrill of competition and shear enjoyment of the sport. Towards that end MBYLL encourages equal play time; no standings are kept and there are no playoffs of league championship.

WYLA is exploring members in the New England Select Youth Lacrosse League for those players who wish to further their involvement in Lacrosse. Details of this additional league will be forthcoming.

Placement On A Team

Placement on any the intramural or travel teams are limited only by available slots. There are no tryouts and first time players are encouraged to participate regardless of age. If the number of signups and playing field availability allows it, WYLA will field multiple teams in a division. However, due to competition with other Spring sports program playing/practice field availability has been the most influential factor in determining the number of teams. It is the goal of the Coaches and Association officials to field teams that are equal size and competitiveness.

Officiating

All MBYLL travel team games are officiated by referees certified by Eastern Massachusetts Lacrosse Officials Association.

Intramural games are officiated by WYLA volunteers that have a solid knowledge of the rules of lacrosse.

Games

For the most part MBYLL games are scheduled for Sunday morning and early afternoon. However, there may be instances where rain outs or scheduling conflicts require games to be schedules at times  days. Team schedules are developed by the MBYLL with an approximate equal number of home and away games. All home games will be played at the Beasley Oval behind the high school. Directions to away games can be found by going to the Directions page.

All Intramural games are home games and are played at the Galvin Middle School.
